It is argued that Jonathan Wild is the model for modern-day detectives. He is first to start the business of private detection in 18th century. He would charge a fee for finding the stolen items and returning them to their owner. In 1715 England, under the Parliamentary Reward System, Wild became a Thief-taker. Because he was a known criminal, he would know who stole the property, and hence it was easy for him to catch the thieves and capitalize on it.
